Here’s our ultimate 3 -day itinerary and guide to ensure you get the most out of your trip to Marrakech.
Day 1: In the heart of Marrakech
in the Morning:
Tour in The Medina
First of all, when we mention Marrakech, we talk about history and rich culture. Start your Journey by immersing yourself in The Medina, the old city of Marrakech, which is aUNESCO World Heritage, the old city is divided into different sections:
The residential area where the locals live it’s like a maze of narrow alleys, where life flows at a more gentle pace than in the tourist area. In this section you will discover the daily life of Marrakchis (locals), with families living in traditional houses, it is also essential to find public ovens, traditional public baths (Hammam), and mosques in different parts of the neighborhood. Wandering through the alleys feels like traveling back in time, it’s very different from the modern part of Marrakech.
Tea Break in a Riad
During your tour, a tea Break in one of the Riads in the heart of the medina is a must, those are restored traditional houses where big families lived, with a central courtyard and garden featuring stunning and detailed tilework, elegant arches and carved wood demonstrating the beauty of Moroccan architecture and offering a peaceful retreat from the lively streets outside. Most Riads in the Medina now serve as guesthouses and traditional hotels that welcome visitors who want a 100% local experience. You can stop by one of them and enjoy a glass of Moroccan mint tea and savour Moroccan pastries.
Workshops and Souks
Marrakech is well known for its centuries-old craftsmanship, another side of the medina is where you’ll find the different workshops, where artisans use ancient techniques to create handmade beautiful items like leather goods, pottery, metalwork, wood carvings, and textiles. You will witness how these craftsmen work skillfully with their raw material and turn it into beautiful pieces of art. These workshops offer a unique opportunity to observe Moroccan culture and artistry up close.
There is also the famous Souk, the vibrant market that combines different colors, sounds and scents, you’ll find the pieces made in the workshops as well as handmade carpets, spices, jewelry, clothing, and traditional lanterns. You’ll be able to interact with local merchants, it’s a perfect place to pick up a souvenir that represents the rich heritage of the city (Make sure to negotiate the prices every time you stop to buy something that interests you).
Monuments
A Medina visit will not be complete without vising Marrakech's most iconic monuments, each one of them representing the city’s rich history and architectural splendor. Here are some monuments that we highly recommend you to explore :
Medersa Ben Youssef : It’s a former koranic university built in the 14th century, one of the most important historical sites in Marrakech. Read more about it.
